Flamingo Flowers
If you're tired of the same old ivies and philodendrons you may want to try something different. There are literally thousands of tropical plants to choose from, but unfortunately many will not do well in the low light and low humidity environments of our homes. However, with a little care and perseverance there are some tropical plants that will will reward you with not only flowers but also perhaps even fruit!
Flashy Anthuriums
When you think of flamenco dancers, what images come to mind? Bold splashes of red and pink, gracefulness, vitality. These are the qualities of the flamingo flower, which is called anthurium. These flowers bloom in bold red, pink, and lavender. They have an intriguing wrinkled, shiny, almost waxy texture. What we consider the flower is not actually the flower but a spathe, a colored portion of the stem.
This greenhouse plant, chiefly from Tropical America is grown for its brilliantly colored flower spathes and its ornamental foliage. The word Anthurium is derived from the Greek 'anthos'', a flower, and 'oura', a tail, referring to the tail-like flower in the center of the spathe.
Anthuriums prefer temperatures above 65o F. They like filtered sunlight and will tolerate fairly low light. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings, and then water thoroughly. Fertilize every two weeks at a low concentration during the growing season. Group these plants with other plants to help maintain high humidity which encourages flowering. Anthuriums are an easy to care for houseplant that will flower for several months of the year with the right conditions.
